The Grim and the Gentle

Around Valentine's Day, the young female orangutans Dagoy, Isis and Markisa were released into a protected rainforest together with 17 other orangutans. While Dagoy is grim and completely avoids human beings, Isis and Markisa are as grown-ups still tame. Today, all three of them have to manage on their own being back in the wild.

Teenage orangutans move to Island University

26 orangutans will get a taste of what life without people is like. At the end of December, they were moved to the island university, where they will live almost as wild orangutans before they are released back into wild rainforest.

Joey, the youngest at Samboja Lestari

The Rehabilitation Centre Samboja Lestari got a little new resident in December, the tiny baby orangutan Joey, who arrived at the center sleeping in a red plastic basket with a white teddy bear by his side.
